Pen spinning

I remember trying spinning pens in college, just to get through the class hours. Boring lectures on unnecessary topics, would always mean either the gang was busy chatting up or trying something.
And this is a pet peeve of mine. even though its been a long time since i tried it. Come on, i dont have habit of taking down notes and i use computers now, and the only time i use a pen is to sign the debit/credit card bills ;-)

hitch-hiking : free stay and rides

This is from a news article in ibnlive. I am putting it here so that you can avoid all the ad spam.

A Russian traveller is on an expedition to study different cultures and tradition in different parts of the world. His mode of travel depends on the ‘free rides’ that he is offered along his route.

Sergey Chikachov recently arrived in Patna from Nepal and is now on his way to Varanasi (Benaras).”The main purpose of my expedition is to study various cultures, traditions, lifestyles, ethnic groups and languages,” said Sergey Chikov. He is determined to visit different places of the world without spending a penny from his pocket on travelling. He has no vehicle of his own, nor has he any money for buying tickets for his travel.Sergey narrates people about the objective of his tour and usually gets a free-ride to his next destination. Meenmutti

I am now recycling through some trips i made back home. This trip is to the Mennmutti waterfalls near Trivandrum. I made this trip along with ILP (TCS’s version of a paid holiday) classmates during our stay there.

myself, karthick, arun and rahul had come along in this trip just because Meenmutti was part of the itinerary . Though for most of the class the trip was to go to the top of a certain mountain (i cant seem to recollect the name) since they had heard stories from someone, that the mountain top was awesome. Even with arun’s local knowledge, we could not convince the class that the top had nothing to it. Having reached the top and happy to see the dejected classmates, we used the moment and hurried the class to get back to the van, so that we could spend more time at Meenmutti. Previous batches had warned us about the difficulty and risk involved in trekking towards the falls, and expectedly it only heightened our desire to make this trip. (more…)

Brain vs Brain

I came across this spinning lady animation. It’s a simple animated GIF so there are not much of tricks involved.

spinning lady

The question is, which direction do you see the lady spinning ? clockwise or anti-clockwise ?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. And this is what the right and left part of the brain do,

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic , detail oriented , facts rule , words and language
present and past , math and science , can comprehend , knowing
acknowledges , order/pattern perception , knows object name
reality based , forms strategies , practical , safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling , “big picture” oriented , imagination rules
symbols and images , present and future , philosophy & religion
can “get it” (i.e. meaning) , believes , appreciates , spatial perception
knows object function , fantasy based , presents possibilities
impetuous , risk taking

To help matters, At first glance she spun clockwise, after sometime she was spinning anti-clockwise and last time i checked she was spinning clockwise. Thats probability playing with me, but i guess i am more right sided than left sided (2 out of 3).

autumn colors

eyes transfixed to the monitor in front, chugging along to complete the job in hand ‘packaging & integration’, with quite a bit of work lined up for the day after ‘packaging & integration’ is done.

As soon as ‘packaging & integration’ is done, i look out the window. Looking at the autumn colors. The graveyard, the city in front of me, draped in shades of yellow and orange overlooked by sky blue.

Starring at the world outside, i realize how lost i am in the cubicle around me. i am more at home in the outside world than sitting in between the walls in this cubicle. This thought keeps striking me daily or when ever i look out. The feeling, of being out of sorts or out of place in the closed environment is not new.

i lower my sights and get back to the monitor, i occupy myself with something for the next 1 hour. 1 hour later, the cycle restarts. I gaze out, feel out of sorts and spend 10 odd minutes wondering about it all, and start all over again. This routine goes on till the evening.

As the sun sets, i start from office. After having had enough clicks of the sun, reinvigorated and all charged up i head back home. Only for this daily cycle to start all over again tomorrow.

This sunset was taken on Oct, 17th, 2007 near the Ruoholahti metro station. i took  close to 12 shots of the sunset and discarded 4 of them. i was so impressed with the color range of the sunset, so i am posting this without much of processing the RAW image.
